I had a really nice weekend hanging out with other health volunteers! We stayed in cabins and talked about our experiences so far at site. The health volunteers who have been here for a year led discussions and took questions about work, life, etc. Extremely helpful. Even though I slept only a couple of hours (Moldovan party with blaring music next door... lack of heating...) I feel refreshed and motivated to go back to site. The older volunteers had awesome advice about classroom discipline, cool ideas for clubs I can start with students, summer camp ideas, ideas of training activities we can do in our village health centers, and so on.
I'm hoping to start working on a seminar for the nurses at my health center (a seminar on how to give seminars), a Model UN club for students, a yoga hour for my girl's club... I've been under a ton of pressure to teach English in my village. I've gone from being uncomfortable about the idea--when I arrived I could hardly speak Romanian, my goal here is health, NOT English education--but now that my language has progressed I'm thinking that maybe I could teach health concepts in English if students are interested in a conversational English club. Few speak decent English, but it might be something I could try next year. To give 1 hour of my time per week to English would not only make me feel intelligent...(Let's be honest, it feels great to show people you can communicate fluently in a language!)...so when I'm asked for the millionth time to tutor someone in English I can refer them to my meeting.
I've been asked by people if I have any needs. And the answer is YES!
If anyone could send any of the following items, it would be amazing.
-Turkey jerky
-Tuna fish packages (light weight for mailing)
-Trader Joe's Fish Oil supplements
-Crest Glide dental floss (in the small silver-colored square box, please:)
-Low-fat peanut butter
-2 hair combs
-Any fun magazines in English (or other reading material though I have a library for most books)
-Any new articles on health-related research
-Wool socks
-Any other fun stuff
I think I'm anemic so any of the first few food/supplement items with iron (and protein) would be great!
